What's a Student Employment Referral and how can I get one?

How can I tell what jobs are available?

What do I do if I find a job that interests me?

I've been asked to interview, what do I do?

If a potential employer asks you to come to their office for an interview or to complete an application, be sure to make a good first impression. You should:

  • Be on time, presentable and respectful.
  • Communicate your value through your accomplishments.
  • Take your student employment referral and your documents establishing identity and work eligibility with you.

They offered me the job now what do I do?

Before you can start work, your new employer will meet with you at the hiring department to review and complete required New Hire documents.

The documents must include:

  • I-9 Form
  • Federal & State Tax Withholding Form
  • Electronic Direct Deposit Form
  • Personal Data Form
  • Ethics Training
  • Sexual Harassment Training
  • Illinois Mandated Reporter Acknowledgement Form
  • Student Employment Referral (Accessed via Salukinet)

To complete the hiring process you must follow these instructions:

  • U.S. citizens, Permanent Residents, and International students will need to take their completed hiring documents to Student Employment Services, Student Services Building, First Floor Suite 110. International students will e-mail the International Tax Specialist, provide their tax and electronic deposit form and receive other instructions.
  • Finally, you will be given a yellow Supplemental Time Card to return to your employer.
  • The Student Employment Handbook is available online at studentemployment.siu.edu to assist in answering questions you may have concerning the Student Employment program.

How much will I be paid?

In most cases, the pay structure ranges from the SIUC established minimum wage rate. You will begin employment at the minimum rate unless you qualify for a job classification increase or an excess qualification/market adjustment increase.

How many hours can I work?

All student employees will be limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week for any combination of multiple job types which include student employment. Information regarding multiple jobs can be found in the Student Employee Handbook.

How often will I get paid?

You will be paid on a bi-weekly basis, (every other Friday). Payroll periods run Sunday through Saturday, with the payday being the second Friday following the end of the payroll period.

How do I know how much my pay will be?

You are encouraged to view your payroll information via the HRSS portal, which is updated the Monday prior to each scheduled payday.
