Purpose
To promote equitable access to student employment opportunities, ensure compliance with university hiring procedures, maintain accurate records of student employment activity, and provide consistent recruitment practices across campus, all student employment positions must be posted through Hire a Saluki (commonly referred to as Handshake) before hiring.
Policy Statement
Effective August 1, 2026, all departments, units, and offices seeking to hire student employees must post available student employment positions through the Hire a Saluki.
Posting a position in Hire a Saluki is a mandatory prerequisite for hiring any student employee. Student employees may not submit paperwork or begin work in a position that has not been posted through Hire a Saluki.
The Student Employment Office will not process student employment hiring paperwork for positions that have not been posted in accordance with this policy.
Scope
This policy applies to all student employment positions processed through the Student Employment Office. Note: This does not include assistantships or other contract-based student positions processed through other departments.
Posting Requirements
Departments must:
- Submit a job posting through the student employment website (studentemployment.siu.edu).
- Include an accurate job description, qualifications, pay rate, work schedule, and supervisor contact information.
- Postings should be available to students for a minimum of two weeks.
Exceptions
Exceptions to this policy may be granted only by the Student Employment Office under limited circumstances. Requests for exceptions must be submitted in writing and approved prior to the hiring action.
